abstract = "Brazil is among the top agriculture producers in the world and
much of this is due to technological advances, which have resulted
in grain yield increases in the last decades, along with land
availability for the expansion of the agriculture frontier.
However such expansion faces criticisms due to its close relation
to Land Use and Cover changes, be it through direct conversion of
natural lands to crop plantations or through indirect land use
change caused by the conversion of deforested areas from one land
use to another. Here we analyze terrain slope and climatic water
balance variables of annual crop production areas in the Cerrado
biome, Brazil, and compare these to established pasture areas in
order to evaluate land availability for cropland expansion. This
study does not take into account soil properties (fertility,
drainage) or legal limitations i.e. Brazilian Forest code. Results
indicate that 445 thousand km2 of pasture areas in the Cerrado
biome presents slope and climatic characteristics (annual
precipitation, annual water deficit and surplus) suitable for
agriculture. More than half of the lands with slope between 0 and
3% are located within 15 km of agricultural areas already
established. The states of GO and MS holds the largest amount of
suitable lands. In GO, 72% of the flattest areas (0 3% slope) are
located within 15 km of established agricultural areas while in
MS, only 48% is located within that distance.",
